Ahoy!

Welcome to thekirkie.com! This is my first website, but I've seen enough of them to know that they often include a FAQ. But, since no one has ever asked any questions, it's really a NAQ.

NEVER ASKED QUESTIONS

What is this?
This is a website built around my short film, THE KIRKIE, which you probably watched before clicking over here to read this.

What’s THE KIRKIE?
I just said, right up there, it’s a short film I wrote, directed and produced. You really should read more closely

No, I mean, in the context of the film, what’s the Kirkie?
Oh, right. Sorry. Glad you asked. The Kirkie is the unstoppable, two-hands-as-one-fist martial arts maneuver used, exclusively, I believe, by James T. Kirk, Captain of the Starship Enterprise on the beloved television series Star Trek TOS (that’s an acronym for The Original Series, FYI) (FYI is an acronym for For Your Information… BTW).

Whence came the Kirkie?
Buckle up, it’s a rough ride. As rough as, say a shuttlecraft trip into a Giant Space Ameoba. A long, long, long time ago, my manager, the Great Andrew Deane (hi, Andrew!) finagled a deal for me with a tiny little division of Fox Searchlight called Fox Searchlab. They’d give aspiring filmmakers the equipment, guidance and, most importantly, the insurance to shoot a short film. Which is what I did. In 2004.

2004!? The year?! It’s 2008!!
Er… yes, I know. I got busy. But I am aware of just how long that is. Here I am with my lovely and very patient wife Susan and our son Riley on the day of the shoot at Vasquez Rocks….

Riley and Dalila at Rocks 2008

And here are Riley and my daughter, Dalila, back at the Rocks last December, when we were getting what I thought was the last pick-up shot of the movie (it wasn’t). Amazingly, the day we showed up, I noticed the park was full of Paramount Trucks and fake boulders. Can you guess why?

I thought I was asking the questions here!
Wrong answer! The Paramount Greenskeepers were breaking down a location from Star Trek XI!! Man, I wish I’d had the foresight to have some fake boulders with me during the shoot back in ’04! You’d have seen some Gorn-a-rific action like THIS:

Gorn-a-rific Action

Coincidence?
Well, yes. But a very cool one. To make a long story a short blog entry, my postproduction lasted longer than the division at Fox through which the film was created. Along the way, I have had unusual adventures and met some of the most talented and, I must say (since I was somehow able to bamboozle them into helping me finish this), gullible people you can possibly imagine.

If people show interest, I’ll tell you more of rip-snortin’ yarns of no-budget filmmaking, bone-chilling persistence, and dumb luck, both bad and good. Small tales, individually, but together they combine to make the EPIC that was, and is, the making of THE KIRKIE!
